Oceanside to Carlsbad: The Perfect Coastal Bike Day
There’s no better way to take in the laid-back vibe of coastal North County San Diego than from the seat of a beach cruiser. From Oceanside to Carlsbad, a mellow, scenic bike route hugs the Pacific, offering ocean views, surf checks, and plenty of stops for tacos, coffee, and cold beer. Whether you’re looking for a mellow half-day ride or an all-day adventure with frequent stops, this route delivers. And if you’re staying at the Green Room Hotel (part Oceanside hotel and part Carlsbad hotel), you’re already perfectly positioned to start your ride.
Grab a Bike and Hit the Strand
The ride kicks off on the South Oceanside coast, just a short pedal from the Green Room Hotel. Guests can borrow one of the hotel’s cruisers or rent a bike from nearby Wheel Fun Rentals or SoCal Bike in downtown O’Side. From there, head toward the coast and hop onto The Strand, a beachside stretch that runs from Wisconsin Street north to Breakwater Way. This is the heart of the Oceanside beachfront—think longboarders carving, locals jogging, morning walkers with coffee in hand, and pelicans flying in formation overhead.
Coffee and Surf Checks
No coastal ride is complete without a surf check. Stop at the Oceanside Pier to catch a few sets rolling in or watch the local groms at the north jetty. Then, cruise just a block inland to Camp Coffee Company on North Cleveland Street for a cappuccino and pastry. Tucked into a cozy, woodsy-themed space, it’s the perfect place to recharge before continuing your ride. If you’d rather fuel up closer to the hotel before heading south, Revolution Roasters on South Coast Highway is a local favorite.
Southbound to Carlsbad
From the pier, start pedaling south along Pacific Street, which eventually merges into South Coast Highway. This stretch rolls past classic beach cottages, salty-air restaurants, and surf spots like Buccaneer Beach. You’ll get occasional glimpses of the ocean between rows of palm trees and rooftop patios. There’s a dedicated bike lane most of the way. The ocean is never far from view.
Lunch in Carlsbad Village
After roughly 5 miles of scenic pedaling, you’ll roll into Carlsbad Village, where surfy storefronts and sidewalk cafés line the streets. Park your bike and take your pick: hit up The Goods for craft donuts, grab a vegan bowl from Choice Juicery, or settle into a shaded table at Señor Grubby’s for some of the best fish tacos on the coast.
Boutiques and Beach Time
After lunch, wander through Carlsbad’s many boutique shops. Stop by Sea + Wander for beach-inspired home goods. If you’re more into beach lounging than boutique browsing, head a few blocks west and relax on the sand at Tamarack Beach. It’s a mellow break perfect for a mid-ride breather or a quick swim if you packed a suit.
The Ride Back North
Once you’ve soaked up the Village vibes, it’s time to head back north. Retrace your route or take a slower pace and explore any spots you missed on the way down.
Sunset Back at the Green Room
Wrap up your day where it began—at the Green Room Hotel. Whether you spent an hour cruising or a whole afternoon exploring, you’ll appreciate unwinding in the hot tub or relaxing in the comfort of your room before dinner out on the town. Head to the hotel’s courtyard for a sunset drink or grab takeout from one of the many nearby restaurants (Local Tap House and The Whet Noodle are both solid bets).
Nothing beats a coastal bike ride. You’re close enough to the water to smell the salt and feel the breeze, but far enough off the sand to take in the bigger picture—the architecture, the neighborhoods, and the people. And for guests of the Green Room Hotel, it’s all right outside your door.
